Origami Triangle Star Card - Hanukkah Blog Hop

Happy Hanukkah!

Today's Blog Hop took me WAY outside my comfort zone!  I have never created a Hanukkah project before and, quite honestly, didn't know much about it!  When Stefanie Pletscher set up this hop as part of her #stampingdiversity mission I was "in"!  What a great way to stretch ourselves creatively and learn about other cultures, religions and celebrations at the same time!

If you are interested in learning a little more about Hanukkah her is what Wikipedia has to share:

Tell me more about Hannukah

Armed with my new (still fairly limited) knowledge I headed off to Uncle Google to research some projects.  I came across an Origami Star Card.  There were a few samples I found but I watched a YouTube video from Deb Valder that helped me come up with this as my project to share with you today:

I LOVE it!!  It looks so hard but it's really SO easy!  It does take more paper than I usually use but it's SO worth it!

The easiest way to learn how to make this card is to watch my video.  Click on the image below.

Videos are great but, personally, when I find a projectI love I do like to have the dimensions written down as well, to follow when I go to make it.  So watch the video, but here are the dimensions you want to make note of:

Main Triangle:
  • Whisper White 12" x 12" card stock cut.  Cutoff 1 5/8" off one side.
  • On the 12" side, take a pencil and mark the 6" point along the top.
  • Cut your paper from the 6" tick mark to the bottom left hand point of the paper.
  • Cut your paper from the 6" tick mark to the bottom right hand point of the paper.
  • You now have a triangle.
  • On your scoreboard, score each side of the triangle at 5 1/4" and 7"
  • Fold on all score lines.

Next cut your layers:
  • Night of Navy Card Stock measuring 4 3/4" x 5 1/2"
  • On the 5 1/2" side, make a pencil mark at the 2 3/4" point
  • As before, cut from the tick mark to the bottom left corner and then from the tick mark to the bottom right corner.  Cut a total of SEVEN of these pieces
  • Place one long side of your triangle at the 1 1/2" mark on your trimmer and cut your triangle.
  • Flip the new, smaller triangle you just created around and cut off 1/4" piece.
  • Repeat this step FIVE more times.  You will end up with one LARGE triangle and six cut triangles.  These are pieces you use for layering.
Next cut more layers, in a contrasting colour or Designer Paper.  I used "Feels Like Frost"
  • Feels Like Frost Paper measuring 4 1/2" x 5 1/8"
  • On the 5 1/2" side, make a pencil mark at the 2 5/8" mark.
  • As before, cut from the tick mark to the bottom left hand corner and then from the tick mark to the bottom right corner.  Cut three of these if you want to decorate just the front; 6 if you want to decorate the front and the back.  I also cut one piece this size in Whisper White to decorate the centre of my card.
  • Place one long side of your triangle at the 1 1/4" mark on your trimmer and cut your triangle.
  • Flip the new, smaller triangle you just created around and cut off 1/2" piece.
  • Repeat this for all three designer paper layer pieces.
Tape all your layers onto your star.  The rest is just decorating!  I used my Stitched Circle and Layering Circle Dies for my front/top sentiment.  This piece was attached using jut two dimensionals in the top left are of the circles.  You need to make sure your project can open, so don't get carried away and adhere the circles in too many areas!  the sentiment "Happy Hanukkah" was made using "A Wish for Everything" stamp set and "Word Wishes" dies, using Night of Navy card stock and ink.  On the inside I used the "Sweetest Time" set along with the "Piece of Cake" stamp set.  The star is from "Tree Angle", stamped in Smoky Slate and Daffodil Delight.  To make the Menorah I simply inked up the candle stamp and stamped the image three times.  The first time I inked up the stamp then REMOVED the ink from the fifth (far right) candle before stamping.  I now needed to make the firth candle taller than the rest, so, the second time I inked up just ONE of the candles, removed the bottom line of the candle and stamped it slightly higher than the others.  I then took my Night of Navy Marker, extended the length of the candle and drew the bottom line of it by hand.  I then inked up the candle stamp a third time and removed the ink from the far left candle and stamped it.  I now had the traditional nine candles.  I used a 1/4" strip of Night of Navy to create a candle holder to "ground" the candles (you don't want images just floating in the air!)

So those are the highlights written down for you.  You definitely need to watch the video for it all to make sense.

That's a lot of typing!  Here is the project one more time:
I hope you like it and that you try making one yourself!  I have one friend who celebrates Hanukkah and I just know she's going to love getting this card in the mail!

A full listing of the products I used are at the end of this post.  Not included in the list are the Seaside Spray Marker and the Daffodil Delight Marker.

Now hop along to see what amazing Hanukkah project my friends have created for you.  Thanks for popping in - have a stampy day!
